Unlinked Luttrells

This page features basic information that I have collected on Luttrells that I have been unable to link in with any of the lines featured in the Luttrells of Coolbanagher, the Luttrells of Courtwood or the Luttrells of Tipperary and Kilkenny. I have split these into three main groups
1. Laois.
2. Rest of Ireland.
3. Irish born Luttrells in International census records.

Laois - unlinked Luttrells

1) Joseph Luttrell of Portarlington married Margaret Doolittle abt. 1801 and had two sons, John, who was in the military, and Alexander Luttrell, who was a doctor in Waterford City and who died aged 29 abt 1836 and is listed as Church of Ireland.
Joseph is said to have died in a fall from his gig while returning home from races at The Heath.Joseph was listed as a Glazier by profession which is the same profession listed for Alexander Luttrell listed on line 4 of the Coolbanagher page. Both of these had Portarlington connections so a relationship is possible but unproven.

2) Thomas Luttrell of Lea parish married Mary Leonard and had five children, Thomas b.1820, Elizabeth b.1822, Daniel b.1823 and Kate b.1828 were all baptised in Lea parish (Townland unknown). James b.1835 was baptised in Monasterevin RC Parish Kildare when Thomas's address was given as Monasterevin. Daniel is best known to me, he served in the RIC and married Mary Corry from Co. Clare. They moved to Australia and had 3 children. However there are no live descendants today. According to newspaper reports Thomas's father was William Luttrell of Cappakeel House. It is not known if he is the same William Luttrell as listed in "Line 3" on the Coolbaangher Luttrell page. Here is a link to Hartley Budds website with information on this family.

I believe that James served in the RIC in Leitrim before emigrating to New York where he married and had children James and Ella (later Ella Lucas). While Elizabeth is believed to have married Michael Hall in Lea parish in 1854, nothing more is known of Thomas or Kate. Thomas Luttrell's sister Maria Luttrell married Pat Dungan of Feighcullen in Allen Parish, Co. Killdare in 1839.

3) John Luttrell of Killenard parish born abt 1820 and buried in Hale R.C. Cemetary, Middleton, Connecticut in May 1854. I suspect that John could be a son of Alexander Luttrell and Mary Dunne of Courtwood, born before the parish records commenced in Lea Parish. It is interesting to note that later generations of Luttrells, Bridget and Catherine, daughters of Simon Luttrell and Julia O'Mara also emigrated to Middletown, Hartford, Ct.

4) Mary Luttrell christened Stradbally R.C. parish March 24th 1839, her father is listed as David Luttrell and her mother listed as Mary Reilly.

5) John Luttrell, aged 38, and his wife Kathleen, both Church of Ireland, (no children listed) living at Killeen, Killaban parish, Co.Laois in 1901 Census. It is most likely that John was a son of Thomas Luttrell of Ballyadams and grandson of George Luttrell and Jane Bailey, see Line 1 on the Coolbanagher page.

6) Robert Luttrell of "Stradbelly" Laois an Army private at Chatham Barracks, Gillingham was listed in the 1851 Census aged 18 years.

Rest of Ireland - Unlinked Luttrells

1) Capt Frederick Proctor Luttrell, born Ireland, married Elizabeth Hodge and they had a family which included Alexander, who was born in Edinburgh. Alexander also served in the Army and spent some time on duty in South Africa. He married twice and among the children of his first marriage to Matilda McDonnell, who were born in Birr,Co Offaly were Alexander, Katherine, Fred and Mary Jane. Mary Jane returned to South Africa and married there. There are descendants today in South Africa. Frederick Proctor Luttrell joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers in Athlone in 1841 aged 18 and died in 1875. His father was Robert Lutttell, a mason.

Examination of Scottish Records at Scotlandspeople@gov.uk shows;
a) Solomon Luttrell, a gardener born in Ireland, married Agnes McAllister in Glasgow 1862. His father was listed as Robert Luttrell, a Baker. Their children all born in Dunbarton Scotland included William, Howard, Isabella, Mary, Ronald Alexander, David and George Frederick Luttrell.
b) Alexander Luttrell, born Ireland in 1815 and married to Catherine McKetchnie in 1863, was listed in Cambeltown, Argyll, Scotland in the 1891 census. His profession was recorded as an Army Pensioner. His father was also Robert Luttrell, a Baker by profession. I am looking at the possibility that Frederick Proctor, Solomon and Alexander were brothers.

2) Frederick Luttrell and his wife Mary lived in Trim Co. Meath and emigrated to America about 1910 where Freddy was born shortly after arrival. There was also a daughter Frances who died in 1977. There are descendants alive today in America. It is possible that this Frederick was a son of Alexander Michael Luttrell listed at 2 above.

3) Edward and Catherine Luttrell aged 20 and 18 years respectively emigrated to America via Liverpool arriving 21-July-1851.

4) Baptism record from Monasterevin parish Co.Kildare shows a) 25th May 1826 Peter Behan born to James Behan and Catherine Luttrell, and
b) John Luttrell born 1859 in Coolnafearagh, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare to parents John Luttrell and Esther Nolan.

5) Griffiths valuation 1850-1860 shows a Thomas Luttrell living in a Drumwhinny townland, Magheraculmoney parish, County Fermanagh.

6) Thomas Luttrell's burial recorded in St Mary's Catholic Graveyard, Newry, Co. Down on 21st October 1829 aged 37 years.

7) Griffiths valuation of 1850-1860 shows Richard Luttrell living in Oranmore Townland, Oranmore parish, County Galway. I have been in contact with Bob Luttrell in Florida whose ancestor Henry Luttrell was born abt 1820, of Oranmore Co. Galway. Henry and his wife Mary Mahon emigrated to Philadelphia, PA. In addition the Galway Emmigrants list on Rootsweb (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maddenps/GALWAYEM.htm) gives details of Margraret, Elizabeth and Marianne Luttrell emigrating to Australia on board the Mangerton and Wacousta in the 1850'S. All three were from Oranmore and listed as the children of Richard Luttrell and Catherine (Gordon). The Civil death records list a Richard Luttrell, aged 80, of Galway PLU in 1869 while Catherine Luttrell, aged 80, is listed in 1868. On the same Rootsweb website Henry Luttrell, son of Henry, living at Galway is listed as emigrating to Australia aboard the Forest Monarch. I do not know if these Luttrells are linked to the Luttrells listed as living in Roscommon (point 8) or those living in Laois, Kilkenny or Tipperary.

8) Also in Griffiths there is a record of a Henry Nuttrell in the town of Killukin. This may be a mis-recorded entry as there are R.C. christening records of Luttrells in Killukin Co Roscommon in the 1820's and 1830's. Charles Luttrell and Eleanor Beckeett had Ann and Charles Luttrell while Gilbert Luttrell and Marie Duffy had Thomas, Catherine and Joanna. Later records show Elizabeth marrying John Haswell from Co. Kerry. Between 1835 and 1857 there are 9 children listed as being born to John Dignam and Bridget Luttrell at Killukan and Ballinameen Co Roscommon. Refer to this website for details http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dignan/location.htm

Another son of Gilbert Luttrell and Maria Duffy was Henry Luttrell who was born 1831. Henry emigrated to England and is recorded in the 1880 census as living in Sheffield. He and his wife Martha Brook had six children including Thomas, Mary and John. Thomas married and had family in Oughtibridge who included Arnold who died in World War 1. There are descendants of Henry still living in England today. A John Luttrell aged 30 is listed in the Civil death records in the Carrick-on-Shannon PLU in 1866. This PLU contains the townland of Killukan. Perhaps it was from this line that the following record belongs to : Anne Luttrell married Michael Carr in County Leitrim in 1867 ?

9) Margit Luttrell married Patrick Cummings about 1845 in Dublin and had a son Henry Cummings born 1846 before emigrating to New york in 1847.

10) James Luttrell was born on May 5 1839 and married Margaret Saunders. They emigrated to Canada and had six children who included John, George and William Ernest. There are many descendants today in Canada. James was said to be born in Armagh.

11) Ann Luttrell married John Davis in 1845 and they emigrated to Quebec Canada. They had at least two sons. Ann died in 1905 aged 76 years.

12) In Griffiths valuation for Dublin the only Luttrells in Dublin (Catherine Luttrell and Reps of Henry Luttrell) were of Coolbanagher origin. However the 1851 census of Dublin shows the following additionl information :
a) James Luttrell of 3 Johnston Court, St Annes parish,
b) Rosanna Luttrell of 92, Britain St Great, St Thomas's parish.

13) Leonard Luttrell, who was born in MHow India, a Civil Servant, of 9 Londonbridge Road, Sandymount, son of Henry ( Soldier) and Helena Luttrell, married Olga Williams in Star of the Sea R.C. church on 28th October 1926. Leonard had a family of four, Lionel, Frank, Don and Joan. Lionel emigrated to Australia where he died in 2004. Leonard had brothers John, Ernest and William Francis who were all born in India. William Francis Luttrell married a daughter of JJ Loder of Dundrum, Dublin in June 1929. Leonards mother Helena Luttrell died in July 1936 and her address was the given as Belmont, Nashville Rd. Howth and 7 Cathedral Street Dublin.

14) Civil death records indices show the following Luttrells according to PLU (Poor Law Union)
a) Balrothery PLU ; John Luttrel, aged 30, died in 1864, Catherine Luttral, aged 65, died in 1865, Christopher Lutteral, aged 80 died in 1870 and John Luttral, aged 80 died in 1872.
