Tipperary Luttrells

A). First Tipperary Luttrells?
The earliest reference that I have of Luttrells in Tipperary is an Index to the will of Simon Luttrell of Kilcash dated 1762. Interestingly Simon is a name that has been in the Luttrells of Luttrellstown for generations. Perhaps this Simon is the key to Linking Luttrell family lines together. I am currently looking for information about him as at this point I have not connected him to anyone!

I always spell the name as Luttrell but note with incresed frequency the name spelled as Lutteral especially in the Kilkenny and Tipperary branches. In many cases this spelling was passed down generations after emigration and so please do not be offended if I appear to be deliberately mis-spelling your family name.

B). The LDS family history site
This site has many listings for Luttrells in Ballingarry R.C. parish Tipperary in South Tipperary ( quite close to the Kilkenny border and Callan Co. Kilkenny). These entries show Luttrells in Ballingarry since 1815. Here is a listing of parents and date of first born child;

UPDATE - My most recent information from Tipperary comes from Josie Birmingham, a native of Ballingarry. She remembers the Luttrell family, and although not quite sure if they lived in Jessfield or Farranrory, she recalls that one brother was a teacher. He taught for some years in the boy’s school in Ballingarry village but later transferred to Farranrory as headmaster and taught Josies mother. His brother Laurence, or Lar as he was better known, was a harvester. Josie recalls that as children they looked forward each year to the Threshing of the corn, and on their way home from school when they could smell the engines, and we all knew that Lar Lutterel had arrived. (Thanks for your help Josie)

J) Thoms Directory 1904 :
Thoms directory 1904 lists Patrick Luttrell as a curate for Hollyford, Cashel.

These references show Luttrell living in in Tipperary since 1762. More notably Luttrells appear to have lived in Gortnascullogue before 1838 to at least 1941 and to have lived at Jessfield from at least 1839 to at least 1958. Todays phonebooks suggest that there are no longer Luttrells of these lines in the area however I am trying to find out more and will update as soon as possible

K). Descendants of Michael Luttrell of Nenagh
source : http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/o/c/a/James-B-Ocallaghan-CT/index.html
Michael Lutteral was born 1826, and died June 11, 1897. He married Margaret Meagher(Maher).
They had the following children :
Thomas Lutteral, b. 1843,
Maryanne Lutteral, b. Bef. June 15, 1846,
James Lutteral, b. Bef. March 05, 1851, Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland, d. March 24, 1900.
Elizabeth Lutteral, b. Bef. December 04, 1848,
Michael Lutteral, b. Bef. October 08, 1853,
Margaret Lutteral, b. Bef. November 10, 1856,
Mary Anne #2 Lutteral, b. Bef. January 15, 1864.

James married Anne Madie Hassett and had the following children:
Margaret Lutteral, b. Bef. March 05, 1877,
Thomas Lutteral, b. Bef. March 12, 1873,
Bridget Delia Lutteral, b. March 30, 1875, Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland, d. March 10, 1931, Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland.
Elizabeth Lutteral, b. Bef. September 01, 1884,
James Lutteral, b. Bef. July 06, 1892, d. date unknown.
Mary Anne ( Babs) Lutteral, b. Bef. July 13, 1881,
Bridget Delia Lutteral and Michael Aloysius O'Callaghan married on November 12, 1899, Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland.
They had a family of 10 children born at Nenagh between 1900 and 1921 and one of their children James, married Mary Frances O'Brien in New York and on eof their Family, James O'Callaghan has kindly supplied all of the above information.

In my contacts withe the Luttrell family in Garryricken, kilkenny I have been told of a belief that their family came to Callan from Nenagh and after discovering this information of Michael Lutteral and descendants on the O'Callaghan and O'Brien family trees I wonder what connection exists between the family lines. I noted with interest that it is quite possible that the Ml or Michael Lutteral listed in Bassets Directory in 1889 is the 5th child of Michael Lutteral and Margaret Meagher.

K. DNA Analyis
As part of the Luttrell Surname project we are looking for Luttrells males to do a DNA Test (Buccal swab). We are using DNA HERITAGE for our sample testing.
To date we have results for descendants of the family listed in Section 1 above and for a Luttrell descended from John Luttrell born in Kilkenny abt 1840 and who emigrated to Rhode Island. These results match 22 of 23 markers tested and show a close link, perhaps a common ancestor in the past 7 or 8 generations. We are hopeful of getting additional Luttrells of the Kilkenny and Tipperary lines tested to reinforce this. It is interesting to note that the link between the Kilkenny Luttrells and the Laois Luttrells is less strong as a 14/23 match is the closest we have there suggesting a common ancestor a good many generations before that again.
