The McEvoys of Ratheneska

Laurence McEvoy of Ratheneska, noted Footballer and brother of Annie McEvoy who married Joseph Brophy of Vicarstown.

My earliest known McEvoy ancestor was Micheal McEvoy of Ratheneska. He was listed in the 1825 Tithe Applotment books in the parish of Moyanna. We know that he had at least two children; Margaret and Michael. Margaret McEvoy was born abt 1820 and married Daniel Carroll of Ballyrider. They had seven children and the one I know most of is Michael Carroll of Ballyrider who was born 1855 and married Julia Scully. Their family included Jack, Paddy, Connie, Micheal, Martin and Dan.

Michael McEvoy was born in 1823 and married Margaret Shaw of Roanes Lane Ratheneska.
Margaret Shaws parents were John and Annie Shaw and their tombstone is located inside the ruins of the church in Moyanna cemetery.

Although this page is about the McEvoy Family it is worth noting something of the Shaw family at this point. We believe that this Shaw family is related to the Shaw family that established the Department store in Athy and Portlaoise. Apart from Margaret Shaw the children of John and Annie were William, Winnifred and Christopher all of whom appear to have either died young or never married. Annie Shaw married Mick Fennelly of Bawn, Ratheneska. Their family included, listing spouses names in brackets, Anne (Mick Connor of Mullen), Mary (Pat Connell of Ross), Biddy (Martin Scully of Vicarstown), Winnie (Jim Scully of the Canal, Vicarstown), John(Nora McLoughlin of Jamestown) and Michael (Bridget Shortall of Kilrory). There were also two girls who became nuns but I do not have their names to hand. Another child of John and Annie was John Shaw and I believe that he was either the Father or Grandfather of Jack Shaw who was a noted footballer. Jack Shaw played at full back on the Victorious Annanough football teams of the 1920' and was among many Annanough players who played on the Laois National League winning team of 1925-26.

Returning to the McEvoy family we know of 8 children born to Michael McEvoy and Margret Shaw. In chronological order their children were :
Patrick McEvoy born 1860 married Annie Scully of Ratheneska - their children included Manner, Annie, Ellen, John, Michael and Josephine
Annie McEvoy born 1862 married Joe Brophy of Vicarstown and they had Mary, Margaret, Mark, Michael, Annie, John, Joseph and William.
Laurence McEvoy (pictured above) was born in 1867 and married Mary Anne Malone. Their daughter was Mary McEvoy who was born in 1903 but tragically Mary Anne died after the birth. Laurence re-married a few years later; Polly Tynan and their children included ; Micheal, John Patrick, William, Elizabeth and Margaret
John McEvoy born 1869 was a De la Salle brother and worked on the missions in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
Margaret McEvoy was born iin 1870 and died unmarried aged 28.
Mike McEvoy was born 1874 in and emigrated to the UK where he married Theresa and had a family of three - Margaret, Irene and Kevin
William (Billy) McEvoy was born 1877 and married Margaret Cavanagh of Gorey and was manager of the Co-oP in Athy.
Katie McEvoy married William Lalor and they had a family that included, Michael, Sheila, Bridget, Ciss, Kate, Mary and William. Michael was the grandfather of Dinny Lalor or Jamestown

My interest in the McEvoy family is as a result of the marriage of Annie McEvoy to Joe Brophy of Vicarstown - one of their Children Mary Christina Brophy married Daniel Fitzpatrick of Borris in Ossary and their daughter Anna Fitzpatrick is of course my Mother.
