The Donohers of Inchacooley.

The Donohers

My Ancestors,The Donohers, were said to be originally from Inchacooley, near Portarlington, Co. Laois and were noted blacksmiths. Part of the family moved from Inchacooley to Jamestown and then onto Kilbracken where my great grandfather, John Donoher, had a good business and among the items he was remembered for was his horse drawn Woods harrow.
I have looked at the census substitutes to see if local information is backed up by records and I found the following information.
First of all let me say that the name is spelled as Donoher or Donogher in the records and throughout this page I have recorded it as Donoher only.
In the tithe applotment books of 1826 the follwoing records were found a)John Donoher in Kilbracken, b) John Donoher in Fisherstown, c) Dan Donoher in Jamestown. It is certain that the two John's were not the same person and that they and Dan were descended from the Donoher man who moved to Jamestown from Inchacooley.
In the Griffiths Valuation of the 1850's John and Pat Donoher were listed as tenants on the same land in Fisherstown, John Donoher, my ggrandfather leased in Kilbracken while a Dan Donoher was tenant on the same land in Jamestown. This shows continuity among the three families in the three townlands.
In the 1901 census records the three descendant lines were still there in Fisherstown, Kilbracken and Jamestown. However the then Fisherstown Cross line was at an end as in 1911 the children of Anne Donoher were all unmarried - John aged 69, Mary aged 66 and Dan (or Little Dan as he was known locally) aged 55. Dan Donagher of Jamestown has descendants in Jamestown today who inlude Dick and Matt Donagher. While there are many descendants of my Ggrandfather John, born 1846 only Danny Donoher and his family bear the Donoher name today.

On my fathers side my grandmother was Elizabeth or Lizzie Donoher. Elizabeth had brothers Jonathon and Garrett who were all born in Fisherstown. Jonathon never married while Garret married Mary Behan of Sally Island in 1909. They lived in Finglas where Garret was a farm manager and they had no children. Elizabeths father was John Donoher and her mother was Margaret Nolan. The Nolans had lived on the farm in Fisherstown for at least three generatiosn prior to this. See the Nolan page for more information about the Nolan Family. John Donohers father was also John Donoher and he was married to Eliza Coady. Their family are listed on this page.
