The Cassidys of Fisherstown

The Cassidy Family is an ancient irish Family who are said to have originated in County Fermanagh. My Cassidy ancestors are said to have moved down from Fermanagh to Offaly and onto Monasterevin in County Kildare. My earliest known Cassidy ancestor is William Cassidy who moved from Monasterevin to Bolnagree, just outside Monasterevin and then onto Fisherstown in County Laois. He was directly related to John Cassidy who established Cassidy's Distillery in Monasterevin in 1784. The Distillery was further developed by John Cassidy's son Robert. The distillery was of prime economic importance to the town of Monasterevin and the business continued until the firm closed down in 1921 after one hundred and thirty seven years in business.
The above William Cassidy married twice and we know little about the first marriage except that he had a son William. His second marriage was to Kitty Greenham and as far as we know their children were Patrick, Ellen, Michael and Bridget. We believe that there were two other dughters also, one married John Behan of Conad, Courtwood and the other married a Maher whose children included Bedelia Maher and Rev Fr Columbus Maher. Other sources suggest that Michael was also father to John Cassidy who married Mary Donohue, to Laurence Cassidy who married Mary Devoy and to a Harvey Cassidy. This uncertainty is no doubt helped by his two marriages.
