SIMON LUTTRELL AND ELIZABETH RYAN

LUTTRELL – Ireland to Prince Edward Island, Canada- ABOUT 1824-25

My gg-grandfather, Simon Luttrell, was born abt 1797 in Queens, Ireland. He married “Betty” (Elizabeth) Ryan on March 1st, 1821, in the Roman Catholic Church, as recorded in the Stradbally Marriage Register with witnesses John Miller and John Luttrell, the residence was reported as in Annagh (probably Annanough). (LDS Film Number 926128)
The baptism of their first daughter, Margaret, was recorded as January 19th 1822, in the Stradbally Baptismal Registry with William Luttrell and Cath. Dunne as sponsors, their residence listed in Annagh. The baptism of their second daughter, Mary, was recorded as March 8th 1824, with John Luttrell and Mary Miller as sponsors, with their residence in Vicarstown. (Both found on LDS Film 926128).
Simon and “Betty” appear on 1861 P.E.I. Canada, Census, Lot 2, w/6 children, 3 males, 3 females, ages 16-21 years old. Elizabeth death was reported in 1862, age 62, buried in St. Marks Cemetery, P.E.I.
The 1880 P.E.I. Census, has Simon listed as 82 years, living with son William and his wife Ann, in Lot 2, Simon’s death was reported as 1883. He is buried in Lot 7, Palmer Rd Cemetery.
Simon and Elizabeth had 10 children, 5 females and 5 males. 2 females born in Ireland, with 5 males and 3 females born in P.E.I.

Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), was formerly known as Isle St. Jean. It was broken up into lots after the French lost Canada to the British at the end of the Seven-year War 1756-1763. Samuel Holland, who was hired by the British to survey the Island, divided it into 67 lots. Lot 10 was drawn by Simon Luttrell, Esq (M.P.) in 1767. In 1775 Simon was listed as half owner with John Moteau, Esq. By 1806, Lot 10 was sold or transferred to the Earl of Selkirk. (Ref PEIGS web site and info from Dorothy (Griffin) Farish.)
Further research by Simon Luttrell (Kildare County, IR.) and myself (Oregon, USA), leads one to believe the Simon Luttrell (VI) (b 1713 d 1787) who drew Lot 10 was the son of Col. Henry Luttrell of Luttrellstown, IR. Simon (VI) married Judith Maria Lawes who was the sole heiress of Sir Nicholas Lawes, Governor of Jamaica. Simon (VI) was created Baron Imham in 1768 and Earl of Carhampton of 1785. They had one daughter and 3 sons.

My ggrandfather, Alexander and his wife Bridget left Prince Edward Island, Canada with their children arriving in Maine, USA in 1883. My grandfather, Alexander Thomas. was 11 years old at that time. The family settled in Willimantic, Maine, later moving to Milo, Maine. My grandfather married Jennie Leonard in 1903. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 1963. Grandmother Lutterell was from the Leonard family who were already one of the older established families in Milo going back to the Farris and Snow families.
My grandfather retired after working 55 years for the American Thread Co. (founded 1902) in Milo, Me. The unincorporated town of Milo was formed in 1823. There are three rivers that flow through Milo, one through the middle of the town and the other two on either side. The rivers provided water-power for the early lumber mills and were used for ‘log drives’ contributing to the lifeblood of the town of Milo.
