Kilkenny Luttrells

1.Earliest known Kilkenny Luttrells
Luttrells have lived in Kilkenny since before 1800. In latter years these Luttrells have lived in the Callan area.
I have details of four brothers Thomas, William, Patrick and James who would have been born about 1800-1820.

a) Thomas had a family of seven which included James, Andrew and Thomas jnr. who was born in 1833. Thomas senior and family emigrated and has descendants living in Iowa and further afield, some of whom I am in contact with.

b) James married Judy Maher abt 1860 and had three children Mary, William and John.

c) Patrick married Ellen Maher and their children include; Bill, Thomas, John, Mary, Norrie, Hannah, Alice and James. Four of their children emigrated to Pennsylvania. Their son James married and had family in the Callan area. Their children, who were born from about 1890-1905's, bear most of the names of their fathers siblings.

d) It is not known what happened to William as we are unaware of any known offspring.

Is there a link between the Kilkenny and Tipperary Luttrells?
As yet this is not known but given a)the proximity of Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary where a lot of Luttrells are recorded, b) the common religion of both lines ; Catholic, c) the occurance of the same names in both lines ; Patrick, James, Thomas, Laurence, Martin and Andrew, it seems likely that a connection exists. Examination of parish records will hopefully help in this regard.
I have compiled in chronological order other Kilkenny Luttrell information below, some of which relates to this family.

2. Tithe Applotment Books
In the tithe applotments of 1827 Luttrells were named in three parishes in Kilkenny. The Kilkenny records show;

5. Dunamaggin Parish Records
Examination of the Dunamaggin parish Records in Kilkenny gave the following records:
a) On Feb 14 1844 Richard Luttrell of Croghtabeg married Anastasia Dunphy, witnesses were Mary Cody and Mary Walshe.( Richard was listed in Griffiths valuation in this townland)

b) Thomas Luttrell and Mary Fleming of Tinvaun married May 15 1870 and the same couple had children born there ; Laurence 19 Dec 1871 and Alice born the following year. 9. DNA Analyis
As part of the Luttrell Surname project we are looking for Luttrells males to do a DNA Test ( Buccal swab). We are using DNA HERITAGE for our sample testing.
To date we have results for descendants of the family listed in Section 1 above and for a Luttrell descended from John Luttrell born in Kilkenny abt 1840 and who emigrated to Rhode Island. These results match 22 of 23 markers tested and show a close link, perhaps a common ancestor in the past 7 or 8 generations. We are hopeful of getting additional Luttrells of the Kilkenny and Tipperary lines tested to reinforce this. It is interesting to note that the link between the Kilkenny Luttrells and the Laois Luttrells is less strong as a 14/23 match is the closest we have there suggesting a common ancestor a good many generations before that again.
