Coolbanagher Headstones

Here is a summary of the inscriptions on the eleven Luttrell headstones in Coolbanagher. All of these are located on the right hand side of the Church and most are at the far end. Several of the stones are flat and almost covered with moss and vegetation. It is interesting to note that the list of Luttrell burials in the church records includes many Luttrell names who do not appear on these stones.

1. John E Luttrell died 24-Feb-1927 aged 75 years.
His wife Elizabeth died 18-Mar-1908 aged 55 years.
Erected by his children.

2. Alexander Luttrell died 7-Jul-1827 aged 65 years.
His wife Mary died 14-Mar-1843 aged 81 years.
Also their children Maria, William and Isaac.

3. James Luttrell died 20-Oct 1772 aged 32 years.
His wife Jane died ????? 1801 aged 60 years.
Stones number 2 and 3 are flat twin stones.

4. John Luttrell died 23-Jul-1827 aged 52 years.

5. George Luttrell of Dysart died 26-Oct-1850 aged 72 years.
His wife Jane died 10 Apr 1861.

6. John Luttrell of Portarlington died 14-Nov-1900 aged 84 years.

7. James Luttrell died 3-Apr-1807 aged 77 years.
His wife Anne died 14-Jan-1832 aged 82 years.

8. James Luttrell Cappakeel died 31-Dec-1966 aged 75 years.
His sister Ida died 24-Nov-1975 and also his sisters Ellen, Caroline and Annie.

9. In Memory of Susan Ellen Luttrell died 2-Jun-1957 aged 73.
Her husband Henry died 25-Jul-1958 aged 80 years.

10. In memory of John Richard Luttrell, Emo Park, died 4-May-1978 aged 78.
His wife Dorothy died 1-Aug-1979 aged 66.

11. In memory of Edward Luttrell of Cappakeel who departed this life 17-Feb-1857 aged 75 years.
Also his wife Elizabeth who departed this life 14 April 1875 aged 79.
Their son Edward died 16 Sept 1904 aged 64 and wife Mildred died 8 Dec 1928 aged 73.
And their son Edward who died young and their daughter Margaret died 27 Dec 1924 aged 48.

Current thinking puts Headstones 1, 2, 8, 9 AND 10 all in a family tree descended from Stone number 3.

Similarily there is evidence to suggest that George, Stone 5, and John of Stone number 4 were Brothers with John of stone number 6 being a son of George.

Nothing is currently known of the Luttrell family buried at stone number 7, James.

Most of the above stones are quite old and it is clear that there may have been other Luttrells stones, especially flat stone types, in the cemetery that are no longer visable. It is certainly true to say that the burial list for Luttrells in Coolbanagher includes many that are not listed on the 11 stones found.
