ALEXANDER LUTTRELL AND HARRIET BAILEY

This Page features information on Alexander Luttrell, his wife Harriet Bailey and their family all of whom emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1855. The information given here has been kindly shared with me by Don and Mary Swindall of London, Ontario, Canada. Don Swindall is a great great grandson of Alexander and Harriet.

Alexander and Harriet lived in Thomard/Clonmullion, Kilberry Parish, near Athy Co. Kildare on land that included a working Mill. Alexander was born near Emo village in the Queens County (now County Laois). This page is presented as extracts from information from Don and Mary Swindall, starting at Alexander and Harriet and working down through their children. Photos, which can be clicked on to enlarge, are included where available. A summarised family tree is then included at the bottom of the page.

HARRIET BAILEY

Harriet Bailey was born in the County Kildare, Ireland and she died of old age. She belonged to the Church of England.
Information shows Harriet had two brothers, Robert and Richard. We think they came to Wellington County before Alex. and Harriet.

RICHARD

RichardLEmma.jpg
Richard Luttrell and his wife Emma Thring.

The original farm remained in the Luttrell family and was farmed by Richard Luttrell, the second son of Alexander and Harriet, until 1912. Then his son Richard "Davis" took over the farm. Richard built a lovely large new house on the home farm about 1886. Richard's family was growing and he decided to build a new house. There were enough stones in his fields to build a house out of stones. At the time a stone church was being built in Oustic at the intersection of the 5th line and side road 22. Also a lot of construction was being done in the nearby town of Guelph. Italian stone masons from Guelph were invited to build St. Peter's church in Oustic and some of the masons helped Richard Luttrell with his house.

Alexander was from Ireland and settled in a place he named Emo, after the town close to his birthplace. Alex Jr. Luttrell became the first postmaster, and of course the first reeve of Emo in 1899. His granddaughter, Marg Jewell, still lives in Emo. "As well as being a farmer and a father of 12, he wore many hats in his lifetime. Besides the first postmaster, reeve, and 'namer' of Emo village, he was a road builder... they were built with hard-earned labour, of digging ditches by hand, and laying corduroy as a base."

ISAAC

Isaac1.jpg
Isaac Luttrell.

Isaac born in 1848, came to Canada, from Ireland as a 6 year old. Later in his life he moved to California after his wife Margaret died and the last year he is shown in the London City Directory is 1897. In Maude's obituary it says she came to California in 1897. He had 2 daughters, Martha and Maude, who married and lived in California. Jack Stevenson has informed us Isaac lived with his youngest daughter Maude near the end of his life. While we were in California we found information showing Isaac living in Capitola for 18 months before his death. Also his daughter, Harriet Stevenson and family moved to California in 1923. Isaac died in California, 6 Feb. 1921, and his ashes were brought back to be buried in London's Mount Pleasant Cemetery by his daughter Margaret Inch.(burial date 21 Jun 1921). His oldest daughter, Margaret had married John Charles Inch and remained in Ontario. Also 2nd daughter Harriet had married Francis Stevenson and also remained for a number of years in Ontario.
Isaac is buried with his wife Margaret(Young) and a baby son Wilfred at Mt. Pleasant Cem. in London, ON. Canada.
1861 census shows Isaac living with his parents in Wellington county.
1869 -1871 We have been told by the California families, that Isaac graduated from college in Engineering, but never practiced that profession. (unable to find Isaac in the 1871 census in Canada, it may be that he was in College at that time as we heard from California cousins, that Isaac had an engineering degree of which I can not find proof).
1873- Isaac and Margaret (Young) married in Wainfleet, Welland Co., ON.
1876- Atlas for Wainfleet Twp. Welland County shows Isaac farming 50 acres Conc.2, Lot 18.
1881, 1882 and 1883 - Census of Canada shows Isaac homesteading 160 acres at Marquette, Manitoba.(Western Land Grants).
1885, 1886 and 1887- Assessment Roll of Elgin County shows Isaac farming in Malahide Twp. Conc. 4, Lot 18, W1/2 and S1/2, total of 50 acres.
1888 - 1897 -Land Registry for the Twp of London (Pottersburg) he and his family lived at Con C, Lot 7.
Source: London City & Middlesex Directory.
1893 Isaac Luttrell was listed as a clayman at Glass Bros. & Co. His residence was Pottersburg. (East end suburb of what is now known as London On.)
He is also shown in the 1896-7 directory in Pottersburg, ConC, Lot 7, land had been subdivized and his Lot number changed to 4.
It would seem that Isaac immigrated to California sometime around 1900 also his 2 youngest daughters, Martha and Maude.
1910 United States Federal census: shows Isaac living in Boulder Creek Twp., Santa Cruz, California.
Also in the household are his daughter Martha, her husbnd John Walter Newlin, their sons Walter and Clyde, also John Walter's father John W (Joseph) Newlin.
Saturday 18 May 1901 Mountain Echo, p. 3, col. 1. Isaac Luttrell, recently from the East, has purchased twenty-five acres of land from Franklin Waters, said land being situated near the summit of Bloom Grade on the road to Big Basin. Mr. Luttrell is much pleased with California and our mountains and will proceed to make a home for himself on his new purchase, which is as yet entirely unimproved.

OBIT Isaac Luttrell ; Monday 7 February 1921 Santa Cruz Evening-News, p. 5
Capitola Resident Dead.
Following a sudden attack of heart failure, Isaac Luttrell passed away at his Capitola home last evening. Mr. Luttrell, while not in the best of health for some years past, especially since an attack of influenza about four years ago, possessed remarkable reserve power and was able to be about as usual within a few hours of his death, and made a visit to Santa Cruz Saturday to call on friends and relatives. Mr. Luttrell was a man who made and held friends, and delighted in taking an interest in the affairs of life. All told, he had been residing in Santa Cruz county for about twenty years, eighteen of which were spend at the old homestead near Big Basin, and at which place one of his daughters, Mrs. Joe Newlin, is now residing.
The deceased was 72 years of age, and was a native of Ireland, being born near Dublin. The surviving children are four in number and include Mrs. Frank Stevenson of Capitola, Mrs. Joe Newlin of the Big Basin, Mrs. Manuel Silvey of Felton and Mrs Charles Inch of London, Canada. The latter only recently arrived in California to spend the winter with her father.

MARY

It is interesting to note, that Mary married and lived on a farm with her husband Robert Brydon jr. very near her father and mother's farm in Eramosa Twp.
Notes from the 1879 Wellington County Atlas:
" Robert, Jr., was born and raised on the "Paisley Block" homestead. In 1868 he purchased 100 acres of land, lot 21, con. 4, Eramosa, where he has since resided. He md. Mary Luttrell. Issue : Robert J. ,Alexander, Harriet, Helen, Adelaide, Janet and Margaret. His farm and improvements are of the best, the result of the energy and thrift of himself and his family. While he has never sought or held municipal office, Robert Brydon Jr., is a leading man in the community. The family are active in the Presbyterian Church. The members of the Brydon family keep up the traditions of their father in good citizenship, and are successful and substantial farmers."
Notes from Rev. Douglas Brydon about Mary Luttrell Brydon.
He described Mary as gifted with a sense of humour, a love of learning, political acumen; committed to her beliefs and strengthened by the harsh conditions of her early life in Ireland.
She had lived in Ontario for 69 years.
